The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has held a Special Congregation for the award of postgraduate degrees to deserving graduands of the School of Graduate Studies.
In an address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor William Otto Ellis stated that Postgraduate education plays a vital role in Ghana’s quest for development and judicious management of the economy. He stressed on the need to introduce development programmes which will equip graduates to build their capacities.
The Vice-Chancellor mentioned that, KNUST would soon be introducing a few more twelve to fifteen month intensive M.Sc. programmes. He added that admission into Ph.D. programmes would be done throughout the year, with comprehensive entry examinations.
He hinted that, plans are underway to restructure KNUST’s School of Graduate Studies. He expressed dissatisfaction with the way students spend so much time on the programme which has therefore led to the advent of the “Project-based Young Scholars Programme” which would be on a faculty-need basis with strict enforcement of deadlines.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the staff and the Board of Graduate Studies for their hard work and dedicated service towards a successful graduation. He also urged the graduands to go out and support the industrial and socio-economic development of Ghana.
He encouraged them to publish their research results so that society would be better informed and benefit from their research findings.
In all, 699 graduands were presented at the ceremony. The number consisted of 190 M.Sc. students, 38 M.Phil. students, 34 MA students and five MFA students.
The rest were 164 CEMPA/CEMBA students, 162 MBA students, one M.Arch. student, 66 P.GDip. students and 39 Ph.D. students, representing the highest number of Ph.D. students graduating in a single year in the history of the University.
